A CPA's guide to finding the money hiding in your business
"I had a great month. So why is there no money in the bank?"
I hear this almost every week from business owners. They work hard, sales look
good, and yet the cash just isn't there. The first thing they usually suspect
is a bad month or a bad customer. But after years of going through the books
of small businesses, I can tell you the real culprit is usually much quieter.
It's rarely one big mistake
Money doesn't tend to vanish all at once. It slips away in small things nobody
thinks to question. The electric bill that went up a little again this
quarter. The stock that expired before it sold. The supplies you grabbed in a
rush at full retail price because you ran out.
Each one feels too small to worry about. But add them up over a year, and it
can equal the salary of one full-time employee. That's not a rounding error.
That's a whole person's worth of pay, leaking out of your business.
Why this is also a sustainability story
Here's something I love about this work: wasting less is good for the planet
and good for your profit. Less wasted energy, fewer thrown-out materials, less
unsold stock. To an environmentalist, that's a win. To a CPA, it's simply good
accounting. Every peso you stop wasting goes straight to your bottom line, and
you don't have to sell anything extra to get it.
Four habits that make a real difference

1. Look at your expenses every month, not just at tax time. Notice anything that keeps creeping up for no clear reason.

2. Give waste its own line in your records. When you can see how much you're
throwing away, you naturally start throwing away less.
3. Ask "what does this cost me per item?" before buying something or upgrading
equipment. It makes the true cost much clearer.
4. Check for rebates, tax benefits, or financing. Many efficiency upgrades
cost less than owners expect once these are counted.

You don’t need to be big. You just need to pay attention.

The best-run businesses I've worked with weren't the biggest ones. They were
the ones where the owner took a few minutes each month to ask, "Does this make
sense?" Your numbers are always telling you a story. You just need someone to
help you read it, before the small leaks turn into big losses.
